Grief’s Storm

What do you See? April 2, 2019

Grief startles, rips through

Soul as lightning rends midnight

Strikes match to tinder

Searing deep marrow

Loss is thunder echoing

Heart shudders, weeps ash…

Oblivious world turns, turns

Redolent Respite

What do you See? March/26/2019

It was…comfort, quietude

Whispery with prayers of

Penitents…petitions, often

Apologetic, for protection

Provision, small favors and

Miracles too grand for man

To manage; murmured requests

Accompanied sometimes by

Escaping sob, desperation.

Ambiance redolent…old hymnals

Candle wax, linseed oil, incense

Wafting Heavenward…mustiness

Of generations, the faithful who

Believe even when doubting…

Sick from shame, fear, isolation…

Hungry to receive forgiveness

Reassurances and peace.

Heads bowed, hands clasped

Rustle and shuffle of pilgrims’

Coming in, departing…clinking

Coins dropped in locked mite box.

Recollections, how it was, used to be

Doors ever open, welcome sanctuary

Where this child could bring heart to

Hear God speak in silence, respite dear

Let tears fall into Invisible Hands…surely

He—with nail prints, scourgings’ scars—

Needed no explanation, He’d understand

Maybe someday reveal purpose, plan…

Answer to “why’s”… somehow she knew

He was the One who’d never despise.

How sore, the world which turned away

And bred those who’d enter carrying

Guns…to kill others while they pray.

Ryan’s Ladder

What do you See? March 19/2019

“Look up here, Love!

Yes, it’s me…I promised

I’d come back to you.

You’re a vision to behold

I  missed you so.

I know, I know…gone a very

Long time…but Today’s

The beginning of Forever…

We’ll not be separated now.

Aren’t the colors spectacular?

More vibrant than I’d dreamed

And painted, passing afternoons.

Much to tell each other, yes…

I long to wrap you in my arms

Won’t let you slip, I’ll kiss you

Till you’re breathless, recapture

Years withheld from us as we

Waited…lives and times apart…

Swift-spinning world below.

Hey, have you met van Gogh?

I caught a glimpse of him

Walking, just a minute ago…

Do I smell cinnamon rolls?

You must be working in the

Kitchen, as you’d hoped.

My, I can’t get over the sky

A-swirl…remember, we used

To marvel, evenings…it’s oh

Far More.  We can reach out

Here, actually touch the sparkle

Wafting tingly…and the breeze

Is like it was in the islands!

Remarkable! my mind clear again.

But, Love, tell me one small thing…

Is there a ladder on your side…for you?”

Love Worth Losing All For

What do you See? March 12, 2019

He knew what it would mean

Turning back from choice assignment

Riding through mist, across frosty bridge

The consequences significant…

Everything he’d studied, sweated for

Childhood dream he had aspired to…

But he’d counted well and long the cost

And some things were worth

Losing all else for.

Too many times he’d ridden past her

Window, gazed as she worked busily

On yet another tapestry…essentially

Imprisoned—isolated, shunned by

Townsfolk whose shallow minds

Captured nothing about the girl

With complex spirit, beauty.

He’d observed soul’s sorrow tinting

Smile she offered when he briefly

Stopped, bowed before her on one knee…

The Lady of Shalott.

This day, he’d take them both away…

Break curse which kept her bound

To garret gloom…and prevented her

From stealing path to fairest Camelot.

His once desired prize now lost, but not…

Better trade claimed heart…for love, he’d

Yielded Round Table, Court of Camelot.

Sterling Skeleton Key

What do you See? March 5, 2019

Fair fantasy, copper’d swirl of locks

Bronze satin dress fastened with

Ivory floral mysteries…her loveliness

Lures, but looks a warning:  are you

Certain you really want what I hold?

Have you fearlessness to accept this

Bright sterling skeleton key?

You don’t know what it opens…

If door, just where it leads.

Could be Life’s singular bonheur…or

Agony’s hell-trap, relentless Despair.

Final Trek

What do you See? Feb/26/2019

The last mile.

All considered, I’ve been strong…

If slow and full of murmuring.

His Light has gone before me

Holy lantern of Faith’s mystery…

Glimmered moments in the dark.

I’m moved by recollection of my

Baal-perazim*, God’s faithfulness.

Vision almost gone, I’ve often

Lost focus…but the haze tonight is

Exquisite sapphire, horizon bejeweled.

Nothing is as I’d imagined, expected.

Accustomed to life’s shadowed fringes

I don’t mind solitary journey…the

Lack of competitive moral judgment

Is a relief on this final trek…

I don’t feel cold in winter.

Ahead is the Kingdom, looking

Just like castles I dreamed as a girl.

In my Father’s house are many

Mansions…and I am nearly Home.

*Ba’al-Perazim (Hebrew Owner of Breakings Through) was a place in ancient Israel. It was the scene of a victory gained by David over the Philistines (2 Samuel 5:20; 1 Chronicles 14:11).
